The UN General Assembly has opened at UN headquarters in New York City.

Assembly President Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser opened the session with a plea for global cooperation in tackling crises from conflicts to climate change.

He also said that Libya's interim rulers had sent a letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon asking that the National Transitional Council be recognized as Libya's representative at the world body.

Next week, the General Assembly holds its annual General Debate, when world leaders gather to discuss key global issues.
