Reports say a senior United Nations official will visit Myanmar this weekend to meet with the country's military rulers and recently released opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

Diplomats were quoted as saying Vijay Nambiar, chief of staff for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, was due to arrive in Yangon on November 27.

Since her release from seven years of house arrest on November 13, Nobel laureate Suu Kyi has called for reconciliation talks with the junta.

Myanmar's November 7 election -- the first in 20 years -- was won overwhelmingly by a proxy party of the military.
