Azerbaijan Might Mark President's Mother's Birthday

BAKU -- Azerbaijani parliamentarian Elmira Akhundova has proposed that the birthday of President Ilham Aliyev's mother should be celebrated every year as Mothers' Day, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

A parliamentary majority expressed support for the proposal after it was made on February 1.

Akhundova argued that the Soviet-era tradition of marking March 8 as International Women's Day is "outdated," and that Mothers' Day should therefore be celebrated on April 28, the birthday of Aliyev's mother, Zarifa Aliyeva, who died in 1985.

President Aliyev has not yet publicized his response to the proposal.
