Euro Deputies Seek Resolution On Freedom Curbs In Azerbaijan

TEXT SIZE - +
BAKU-- A European Parliament working group discussed a draft resolution today on the deteriorating situation regarding freedom of expression in Azerbaijan, RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

The major political parties in the parliament in Strasbourg are trying to reach a consensus on the text of the resolution.

The European Parliament will discuss freedom of expression in Azerbaijan while holding a larger debate on individual violations of human rights, democratic norms, and the rule of law on December 17.

Those cases will include the official ban on foreign broadcasters -- including RFE/RL -- and the recent trial and sentencing of two young bloggers, a case which has drawn international condemnation.

The resolution discussed today will be voted on by parliament after the debate.
