Moscow Court To Review Davydova Treason Charges

A district court in Moscow is expected to review the case against Sveltana Davydova, a woman from Vyazma who is accused of treason for allegedly telephoning the Ukrainian Embassy and informing it about Russian troop movements.

The court on February 16 is set to review the legality of Davydova's January 21 arrest.

Davydova, who is the mother of seven children, was initially jailed after her arrest, but was released with travel restrictions following a mass public outcry.

About 40,000 people signed an online petition urging President Vladimir Putin to release her from custody.

Davydova reportedly telephoned the Ukrainian Embassy in April and told its staff that soldiers from a base near Vyazma might be being sent to Ukraine.

Moscow denies any involvement in the fighting in eastern Ukraine.

RFE/RL has been declared an "undesirable organization" by the Russian government.
