Turkey Calls French Armenia Genocide Bill 'Racist'

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan (file photo)
TEXT SIZE - +
Turkey has denounced as “racist" and "discriminatory” a new French measure making it a criminal offense to deny that a genocide of Armenians by Ottoman Turks occurred.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the comments in a speech to his party members in parliament on January 24.

"Those who remain silent and indifferent to these racist, discriminatory developments are guilty of not hearing the footsteps of fascism in Europe," Erdogan said.

The Armenian leadership has described the French move as "historic." France, meanwhile, has called for “calm."

In his address, Erdogan said the bill was "null and void" for Turkey, and threatened that Ankara would implement unspecified new retaliatory measures against fellow NATO member France if the legislation is signed into a law.

"Right now, we are still in a period of patience and we are watching how the developments unfold. We will take the necessary stance according to the developments and unveil our action plan," Erdogan said.

Disputed History

Armenians -- and most historians -- say some 1.5 million Armenians were killed in Ottoman Turkey during World War I in what has been described as a deliberate policy of genocide.

Turkey rejects this, saying there was heavy loss of life of both sides during fighting in eastern Turkey in 1915-16.

France formally recognized the Ottoman-era acts as "genocide" in 2001.

The bill passed by the French Senate on January 23 means that a person in France who denies an Armenian genocide could face a year in jail and a fine of $57,000.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said on January 24 he will sign it into law within the next 14 days, as stipulated by the constitution. Sarkozy's ruling party put forward the bill.

Ankara froze political and military ties with France when the French lower house backed the bill last month.

However, in a letter sent to Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on January 18 and made public on January 24, Sarkozy said the bill did not target one country in particular, and urged Ankara to take into account its "common interests" with France.

Earlier, French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe called on “our Turkish friends to remain calm."

"Turkey is a great country, a great economic power, a great political power. We need to have good relations with it," Juppe said.

"Now this slightly excessive wave [of reaction], one must say it, I am certain that we'll return to constructive relations. I'm holding my hand out and I hope that it'll be taken one day."

'Historic Day For Armenians'

In a letter to Sarkozy, Armenian President Serzh Sarkisian said it was "a historic day for Armenians all over the world."

"This day is exceptional for all those who are struggling for the protection of human rights, for the condemnation and prevention of crimes against humanity," Sarkisian wrote.

Several hundred people gathered outside the French Embassy in Yerevan to express their gratitude, bringing flowers and candles and waving French and Armenian flags.

Turkey's ally Azerbaijan, however, has denounced the French move as "against the principles of democracy, human rights, freedom of speech, and expression."

Sarkozy is facing an election in April, and critics have accused his allies of using the Armenian genocide issue to get support among France's ethnic Armenian minority population.

Bravo France.. France has more courage than any other country. Again the french government and the people in general are not crazy to make such claim to a third country as Turkey that genocide happened. You cant just walk and blame somebody of commiting a genocide unless you have undeniabel proof... And when Turks say leave it to historians, the historians have worked on it for almost 100 years and what has come out of it? Nothing! It is only used as an excuse to postpone or delay facing your own history. Turks think people are stupid enough to believe their excuses...

Krasava, the historians "worked" on it and concluded that it was indeed a genocide. This law is so amateurish historians would not rewrite the history.
If you you recall "historians" in Iran several years ago concluded that there was no Jewish Holocaust. Of course we in the free world know better.

Define "free" world? In Germany for denying holocost you will end up in prison no matter if you are an American or Swede. So much for freedom of speech. What is so "free" about the world where ruling elite forces you to work as a slave? You Russian or Slav immigrants lived all your life in the USSR slavery. That is why u do not know that the country was established because of the British taxes. Now we have more taxes: federal, state, sales, gas, SS, city, school d, etc. What is so "free" about it? Social security is a socialist program. Mandatory health insurance, car insurance, home insurance and all that. "Free"? No, we are not.

Lack of the use of '...' on what Turks say, because we all know what they say is facts (fictional facts).

Stalin's primary adviser was Anastas Mikoyan, can we tie the Armenians to the Stalin's crimes? Just brainstorming.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anastas_Mikoyan
Maybe we should revise the pogroms and deportation of 2.5 millions of Muslim Georgians (Chveneburi) to the Ottoman Caliphate with the confiscation of the Georgian land which was transferred to Armenia? Just brainstorming.

Dear Storko,Mikoyan was a communist and they dont have a nationality-my remark was referring to themoron`s ignorance and rantings against the communists -the present `states` of wild turkey and azerbaybaydjan were both created in the crooked criminal minds of kgb Comintern bastards as vehicles for world revolution. Its good you read wikipedia where anybody can write anything but as they say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing-you must also read Mikoyan`s memories on the subject which unfortunately are not published-the man was a communist of course but he had a unoque achievement-he survived under Lenin,Stalin,Khrushtchev, and Brezhnev and if you know anything about russian soviet history you will know what I mean even if your sources are not beyond wikipedia. The man responsible for the Cration of turkey was Lenin, who also gave large parts of Armenia to turkey, georgia and the artificially created territory of azeristan which had never existed until then.Stalin- good old western ally Uncle Joe was later responsible for the pogroms in the Ussr, and the millions of muslims you and many turkeys blah blah blah about were settled there after the native christian population was wiped out by invading barbarian mongrel mongol tribesAlso you must know that many georgians were forced to convert to Islam or lose their lives.Today those `muslims` are chief russian stooges in the russian enclaves in Georgia. And they were not millions. Some christians were resettled there to give a boost to the region because of the backward nature of the turkic barbarians-as politically incorrect that may sound to you,but it is true-you dont have any experience and real knowledge of these people, and you can find the truth if your livelihood does not depend on them.No georgian land was transferred to Armenia-its the opposite as the armenians had their kigdom long before the georgians, who today as always are oppressing the armenians.closing and stealing their churches, schools ,monasteries ,and discriminating the armenians in every possible way.Your propaganda is good for any turkic country with an average level of 70 to 90% of illiteracy-most rfe/rl listeners do not fit into that category.

I deny and will deny it as it's fake genocide. Inglorious French can pass millions of fascist laws but they can't erase the History. Shameless French bullying is void and worth of toilet paper for many.
Turkey must legalize true Algerian and Rwandan Genocides being committed at the bloody hands French as soon as possible. Khojaly Genocide of Azerbaijani in 90's committed by murderous Armenians and their Russian master should be taken into consideration as well.
Moreover it would be great if Turkey makes law about encouraging the denial of fake Armenian "genocide" on the contrary.

Now this is a typical Turkic mentality be it nomadic Azeri Turks or these nomads currently occupying Constantinople.

For these Turk butchers murders of millions of Armenians, Assyrians, Greeks, Kurds by the bloody Ottomans and Kemalists are not genocides.

But, the deaths of civilians from Xocali (read the true account of Azeri government sponsored propaganda campaign here: http://www.xocali.net/EN/) killed by their own askers somehow constitutes genocide blamed on Armenians.

The same goes to Turks when Erdogan recently blamed Chinese for "genocide" of Uighur Turks who died after attacking Han Chinese workers when 197 died, most of them Han..

Turk logic - Go figure!

To these well-famous Armenian facilitators of the History, Bible, etc., the authentic cases of genocide around the world do not exist; only the bogus genocide claims of the Armenians do. They only pay a brief lip service to the genocides in The North Caucasus(Circassia, Chechnya),Ireland, Algeria, India, Cambodia, Bosnia, and Rwanda, and devote the rest of their writings to the Armenian-Turkish Civil war which they unfairly, incorrectly, but deliberately misrepresent as genocide.

Why on the earth French, Russian or English will judge this Turkish-Armenian Civil war? Answer: Because it's an Imperialist LIE!!!
Why Turkish side is open to define this on the basis of archives documents but Armenian is NOT?
On the other hand, any civil war, including the American civil war, can be made to look like a genocide if one ignores the other side.

Armenians always dismiss their own terrorism, armed uprisings, atrocities, betrayals, and treason; misrepresent wartime measures taken by Turks in self defense; exaggerate Armenian suffering and losses; and totally ignore the Turkish suffering and losses many times larger than the Armenians'.

How long can this ethocidal Armenian campaign continue to depict the vicious Armenian terrorists and nationalists in the Ottoman-Armenian community as "poor, starving Armenians"?

How can "poor, starving Armenians" raise a standing army of 150,000 men, slaughtering defenseless Turkish women and children in Eastern Anatolia and elsewhere?

armenians and greeks were just vassals as minority in the Bysantium Empire, but assyrians and kurds were beyond!!!

This is not new, but disgusting practice by Turk propagandists to blame the victim. Armenian Genocide started way before April 24, 1915. During WWI when Turks were loosing badly on the battlefields, they conscripted Armenian men to the army, disarmed them and massacred them and only AFTER that had balls to move into Armenian populated areas where they massacred unarmed children, women and elderly using regular army and gendarmes. This is what these cowards call "Civil War" - they could not fight Australian, British, Canadian, French, Russian and other troops so they decided to fight their own civilian population whose only fault was that they were not nomads and lived on their own ancestral lands.

"TheHunter from: UK"?
Sure, and I am posting from Mars.

Dude, seek some help, that hate you have inside you is really unhealthy.
Go grab a book, and since you are online do some research, and you'll see how your comments are pure venom.

There was no "genocide" in Khojali. That was a staged scene that unbiased international reporters exposed. Your own Azerbaijani president at that time admitted it was a failed attempt by Azerbaijan to get some sympathy after losing the war to the smaller and less equipped Armenian army.

Yes in Rawanda there was a Genocide, in Darfur there was a Genocide, your ancestors committed three Genocides, the Armenian Genocide, the Assyrian Genocide and the Greek Genocide. You want to hide and deny? You choice, but don't expect the rest of the world to be on your side. The domino effect started, and it is only a matter of time before the interest in Turkey by the NATO dries up and you will be on your knees acknowledging this Genocide and paying for it.
Read history, nothing from your ancestors to be proud of. All wars, hate, crimes, genocides, mass rapes, murders, bacha bazi rape parties, ...etc. Most of the Turk celebrities in history are war generals and mass murderers. In fact, in most of the Arab and east European areas Turks are associated with murder and backwards society that was in these areas under the Ottoman invasions.
So before you shamelessly call others names like murderers and accuse them of crimes that you Turks are notorious for , look in the mirror.

Turkey cannot be a legimitate state until it accepts, apologizes, and pays for its crimes. This issue is going to haunt Turkey forever. Turks did not just massacre 1.5 Armenians, and I mean in the most brutal and barbaric way possible innocent civilians, women, and children. They also stole their money, property, land, and future. This is an indisputable fact. God will not let such crimes go unpunished.

The hypocrisy of the Turkish state and their nationalist supporters is really pathetic. They call others racist, while in Turkey the Armenian, and French are used for derogatory and racist comments and put downs. The so-called democracy in Turkey and Azerbaijan resulted in the worst human rights violations in modern history. The state sponsored killings and persecution of minorities are on record while they have the nerve to criticize the civilized world just because they stood up for the rights of others.

So saying the truth according to the Turks is a crime and standing up against denial of actual and historic facts is a racist action. But crushing minorities, and centuries of racism, wars and genocides is all fine and dandy for them. Even when Turkey itself has the notorious article 301 of the Turkish penal code that subjects anyone who dares to mention anything that they don't like about Turkish history to a witch hunt and prosecution.

Yeah, Turkey is the one to talk about racism, democracy and freedom of speech.

It might be another Russian operation, with help of Sarkisian,
To make believe Sarkozi that he is also Sarkisian,
Thus he would get emotional - as an "Armian",
And join with Russia - making Turkey gone,
For "Crimes against Humanity" be baned,
So UN let Russia invade Turks - to expand.

The French bill is a hard one to either denounce or support. If you support it, you in a way are against the idea of Free Speech. How can one fine or jail a person for expressing his taught's or opinions (however flawed they may be)? The reason why this kind of rationality does not apply to this issue is because in Turkey you are persecuted, jailed or even killed for acknowledging the Armenian Genocide. So the French can deal with this in a "Tit for Tat" manner. If Turkey has laws banning the acknowledgment of Genocide, than why can't the French have laws banning the denial? If Turkey would allow open dialogue in it's own country than maybe other nations will not see the need to involve themselves.

Also, some of the claims the Turks make about Civil War instead of Genocide is just plain dumb. These same claims are being rehashed in comments below as well. Where they state because Turks died as well it can not be considered Genocide. So if that is the logic, can the Nazi's say because some Jews actually fought back during WWII and killed German soldiers than it can not possibly be a Genocide because Germans died as well?

The worst thing about the situation is for the last century this type of flawed logic and denial by the Turks has been allowed to happen. If at the time the League of Nations had more power to enforce the treaties that Turkey had signed none of this would be an issue today. Turkey commits genocide against multiple ethnic groups. It loses WW1. It is carved up by the victors of the war. Eastern Turkey in signed treaties becomes Armenian land in a Independent Armenian Nation. Two years after treaties and end of war Turkey invades Armenia and takes half the nation along with Russia, and nothing is done about it??? Why does no one speak of that? So off course reparations are in order.
