A Pakistani court has ruled the detention of the alleged mastermind of deadly attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai in 2008 void and ordered his release.
In a ruling on March 13, the Islamabad High Court ordered the release of Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi, chief of the banned Pakistani militant group Lashkar-e Taiba.
It is unclear if he will be released, as the government has challenged similar judgments in the past.
India’s Foreign Ministry summoned Pakistan High Commissioner to New Delhi to register its protest against the order.
Lakhvi has been in jail since 2009.
He is charged with masterminding a series of bomb and gun attacks that killed 166 people in Mumbai in November 2008.
Lakhvi had also been granted bail in January in another case pertaining to the 2009 kidnapping of an Afghan citizen.
