Ukraine Unspun

Russian Media Coverage Of The Donetsk Attack On Pro-Ukraine Protesters

Clashes in Donetsk.
Clashes in Donetsk.
This is what we know happened in Donetsk on April 28: About 2,000 demonstrators gathered in the center of the eastern city for a march in support of a united Ukraine.

They were attacked by some 100 men wielding various accoutrements -- including metal rods, baseball bats, and truncheons.

How do we know this is what happened? Our reporters were there:

Violence broke out in Donetsk on April 28 after pro-Russia militants attacked a Ukrainian unity march. (RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service)

But you don't have to take our word for it.

From the Global Post:

From "The Telegraph":

A short video report from ITV News:

It's usually not this simple. On April 27, when pro-Kyiv football ultras clashed with pro-Russian separatists there was clearly violence emanating from both sides. In the case of yesterday's events in Donetsk, however, the evidence of a largely one-sided attack appears to be overwhelming.

But Russian media has an altogether different story.

From ITAR-TASS, a state-run news agency:

"On April 28, masked men shouting nationalist slogans attacked a [pro-Russian] anti-fascist rally. Several dozen radical [pro-Kyiv] activists began throwing stones at the [pro-Russian] procession. They also reportedly had grenades. Rebuffed, the attackers fled."

In linking to the report, Tikhon Dzyadko, a host for the liberal Russian Dozhd TV channel, said ITAR-TASS had gone from "continuing to lie" to "plain fantasizing."

Russian TV blamed pro-Kyiv football hooligans for attacking "pro-federalization" protesters.

The Pravda.ru website took the story a step further, claiming the pro-Kyiv protesters -- linked in the report to a Nazi SS "glorification" group -- tried to carry out a "real cleaning" of the streats of Donetsk.

"The [pro-Kyiv] radicals started to attack people, including passersby, beating them with bats," a report on the site said.

Meanwhile, Graham Phillips, a freelancer for RT, the Russian government's English-language outlet, said Western journalists were being overly simplistic in their descriptions of events.

Although he granted that the pro-Russia side was "just militant today," he said the pro-Kyiv demonstrators had a "peaceful and militant side." And he appeared to blame the "militants" on the Ukrainian side for purposely marching the demonstrators into a pro-Russian attack.

An RT report relied almost exclusively on Phillips' curated tweets -- excluding the one about the militant nature of the Russian side and another about hundreds of peaceful Ukrainians -- and on quotes from the press spokesperson of the self-proclaimed People's Republic of Donetsk, who told RT 1,000 "neo-Nazi thugs" had attacked peaceful pro-Russian protesters.

I watched the newscast of this on France24/English. The provocateurs from Russia (and the Russian military in plain uniforms) are substantially involved there. (In My Opinion.)

Never mind the focus of Odessa (not Odesa) police complicity with Ukrainian nationalist thugs in the sadistic burning and beating campaign.

A bigot like Farion can sit comfortably in the Rada as some opposition politicians have faced nationalist violence.

can anyone tell how much credibility US propaganda as exemplified by RFERL "reporting" may have, given it unconditionally sided with violent Maidan thugs in Kiev, while unconditionally condemning exactly the same-style violence by pro-Russian activists?

@USJack -
As you very obviously know, the Russian establishment is going through great lengths to spin the armed conflicts in eastern Ukraine as a movement similar to the Euro-Maidan, with its malicious intent to make the Western world/media look like hypocrites in supporting one protest while condemning another. But you already know that.

And It’s a false comparison >

A tiny example, - the Euro-Maidan was based on a grass-roots movement that drew support from a wide social spectrum encompassed from all of Ukraine’s regions; it included hundred of thousands of Ukrainians from all walks of life, whether billionaire oligarchs, villagers, Kyiv business-men and Ukrainian students. Activists only resorted to firearms as a last resort when their comrades were being shot dead. The pro-Russian terrorists, however, openly carry automatic weapons, using them to attack police stations and military sites to acquire more arms. These armed pro-Russian fighters engaged in the murder of a city councilman, kidnapping of foreign journalists and police officers and sound out repeated calls for Russian military intervention. They are not engaged in only provocations – but are a Russian sabotage operation.

Only through drooling-Kremlin’s-directives, they try to mimic the Euro-Maidan in parody fashion > i.e. tires used on the Maidan to create a smokescreen against the Berkut (special forces) are only symbolically being duplicated by the separatists/ terrorists as barricades (because they know that no one will truly attack them).

But, again, you know that.

The Euro-Maidan protesters were freedom fighters struggling to rid themselves of the yoke of Russo-Muscovite domination.

And, you know that, also; which is why you troll at RFE/RL with your *useful*, fishing-expedition, Russian-spin, anti-Ukraine posts.

@JLNancy and you know all this because you are in the thick of it, right? Or was this an unbiased CNN's point of view? State Dep didn't exactly hide that they spent, I'm sorry, "invested", $5 Bio to help kickstart this "grass roots" movement. There is not exactly overwhelming support for the new govt in the East, no matter how you spin it. But I am sure you already knew that. There is a reason why the local police and army units will not fight, and it is not because they are afraid of "Russo-Moscovites". The new government has made every step to alienate the Eastern population and made sure police force will not support the govt. But you also provably knew this... that's why they can use tires "symbolically" for now. People didnt like Yanukovich, but they like even less how he was overthrown and by whom, most people prefer Federation (vs. secession) and ability to use their language (one of the first two laws parliament passed, but it was vetoed, was to ban use of Russian as official regional language). This government has made almost every mistake it could and its not trusted. Not to say that RU coverage is unbiased, but US/EU coverage is absolutely biased, always was, don't feed me BS about it. RU is doing what it has to, to protect itself @ its border. When they tried to put missiles in Cuba we almost had a nuclear war... We wouldbt let them help set up a "friendly" regime in Mexico would we? And have they been building military bases surrounding US like we do surrounding them? So please, save your weak rhetoric.

The Russian coverage of the situation in Ukraine is complete propaganda and it is driving me insane. Putin is constantly calling the actions of Ukrainians war-like, but he fails to acknowledge that he annexed a country's territory forcefully under the pretext of "protecting Russians" even though no Russians were harmed during the protests. He also violated a country's territorial integrity, but when that happens in his country it is called terrorism. He also moved Russian forces closer to the Ukraine border, but nope Ukraine is to blame. *face palm*

I think RFE/RL is probably the closest thing you will get to accurate in this country.

Is that you Ms. Power? The RFE/RL coverage is propaganda.

Crimea has been virtually bloodless, thanks to the preventive humanitarian intervention undertaken there. Anti-Russian activity has noticeably increased in Ukraine, since the ousting of its democratically elected president in a coup.

Kosovo highlights the hypocrisy of violating the "integrity" of a national boundary.

Russia should have forces on the Ukraniian border, given the unstable situation in Ukraine.

Jack, you're another of Putin's spinners. You guys seem to be everywhere...but even you must acknowledge that your man Putin is the "Thug of Thugs" & it is he who is arranging this mayhem in Eastern Ukraine & has planned same before even Yukonovych was sent packing.

This is his new way of invading...send & finance the bully boys first & throw in his little green men & some FSB terrorists to create havoc then the real invasion will happen this weekend or next weekend. Probably this one as it is a bank holiday weekend in Europe & so he'll craftily jump in while Europe is off guard...though NATO will be wide awake.

And isn't it funny that he condemns the Maidan & yet keeps silent on the violence his own pro Russian separatists are creating by the day also the kidnappings, the vandalism, the little regard for human life & the the BULLYING, yes, that in Caps because that's what they all are including their chiefs of staff, Putin & Lavrov. Well if this is the kind of behaviour they endorse, is it any wonder the majority of Ukrainians don't want nothing to do with Russia, period.

Jack, if you watch RT, Channel 1, ITAR-TASS, etc. you will, or you should know their forte is lies...& if you don't know that by now you must be one of them who thinks believes all they see on there because it's thrown out on air a million times a day & because Putin owns most of Russian TV or at least controls same. What you should do is go for help for your addiction to the lies of Putin's and even do "Cold Turkey" because as you are you're as "Blind as Blind can be" to the reality on the ground. As for Putin & his little green men, I have a message for all of you & it is..."Get Back" (to the USSR)".

If local and even nearest towns Civilians (installed since USSR agents and snitches) are not masked, thought moving from town to town, in orderly patterns, following orders and training, most of them undercover GRU boys and girls, screaming as orchestra by command;
If masked and uniformed people are strategically located and all look alike, most big size "ambals" with body domina and shape assembled since Brezhnev era (big size Russians only)
for Spatcnaz, to crush and kill non-Russians;
If their commanders (not necessarily big, but usually older)

If they moving from one place to another, taking over, using hypnotists and "NLW" to paralyze resistance, not unlike in

Guys, what's new on the Eastern Front in "Ukraine"? How is the "anti-terror operation" advancing :-)? I heard there were a lot of important victories: particularly the one in Luhansk yesterday (Tuesday) :-)). The next ones will apparently be Marioupol and Berdiansk on the Black Sea shore.
Something tells me that all those promoters of "democracy" and "European values" will be regretting for a VERY long time the day they came up with the brilliant idea of deposing Yanoukowitsch from the presidency of what used to be known as "Ukraine" :-)).

Russians are lying again!
Such forces of Russians invading foreign countries in time of peace and unlashing genocide always existed - Afghanistan,
Abkhazia, WW2, now Ukraine.
Evil Russians learn some arithmetic, this tile lying by opposite:
"If it is new, how can we be already in Ukraine?"
Russian economical and political interests?
Plunder and breed Russians skunks in our land and homes?
Such force last time was trained by British and Germans, so that Russians would cut-off human heads, they practiced it
in Afghanistan and Abkhazia...
IT LOOKS LIKE WEST AND EAST MUST GET READY FOR NEW INVASION OF RUSSIAN LOCUST - BACK TO ARMS?

the story prudently omits the information about SS Division anniversary on the 28th of Apr and with a prudent hypocrytical objectiveness blames both sides for violence the day before. Then it quietly goes on labeling Russian thugs without mentioning neo-nazies. Yes it is free europe and Babitsky knows it for sure

ITAR-TASS is usually quite reliable, this was the worst coverage I have ever seen. But on the other hand Western media, incuding this article above, are extreme in the other direction.
