Ukraine Wins $118 Million Thai Arms Contract

Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych (file photo) (ITAR-TASS) August 16, 2007 -- Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych says his country has won a $118 million contract to supply 96 armored personnel carriers to Thailand.

Yanukovych said today that Ukraine outbid eight countries that had also taken part in the competition to supply the Thai armed forces, including Canada, China, and Russia.

He did not say when the vehicles will be shipped.

After the 1991 Soviet breakup, Ukraine inherited a sizable weapons industry and remains a major producer of arms, such as missiles, aircraft and tanks.
