KABUL -- One Iranian border guard was killed and another arrested in a shoot-out between Afghan and Iranian forces in Afghanistan's western Nimroz Province, RFE/RL's Radio Free Afghanistan reports.
General Saifullah Hakim, head of border police in Nimroz, told RFE/RL that the Iranian border guards ignored warnings from the Afghan forces after illegally crossing the border into Afghanistan and the Tang district of Nimroz.
Hakim said this has been acknowledged by Iranian officials. He added that the detainee -- together with the body of the dead Iranian -- will be given to Iran in a "special ceremony."
Afghan and Iranian forces clashed in the region in March 2007, leaving an Afghan and an Iranian soldier dead.Iranian security forces often clash with drug traffickers on their side of the border.
