Thousands Demonstrate Against Attacks In Iraq

Baghdad, 3 March 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Thousands of people demonstrated today in Baghdad, a day after a series of attacks killed more than 140 people in the Iraqi capital and the city of Karbala.
Protestors condemned the attack demonstrating in the streets of the Baghdad district struck by a series of explosions yesterday as Shi'a Muslims were observing the Ashura holiday. More than 450 people were reported wounded in the attacks, involving suicide bombers, timed explosives, and mortars, in Baghdad and Karbala.

Iraqis today began three days of mourning for the victims. The Iraqi Governing Council postponed the signing of an interim constitution, scheduled for today, and is now expected to sign the document into effect on Friday (5 March).

In the latest violence, an Iraqi worker was killed as rockets struck a telephone exchange, knocking out international phone connections to much of the country.
