UN's Kosovo Envoy Announces Resignation

25 May 2004 -- The United Nations' envoy to Kosovo, Harri Holkeri, announced today that he is resigning his post on advice from his doctor.
Holkeri was due to finish his one-year mandate in August, but he has come under increasing pressure from both inside and outside the UN-administered province following violent Albanian-Serb clashes in March that left 19 people dead.

The outbreak of the violence was seen as a major setback to UN efforts to establish a multiethnic society in the province.

Holkeri, 67, was treated in a French hospital for fatigue earlier this month. Last week, he traveled to Finland for a medical checkup.
