26 May 2004 -- A Russian court today ordered Mikhail Khodorkovskii, the former head of oil giant Yukos, to remain in custody.
Khodorkovskii's lawyer said the order was made without a hearing and violated her client's civil rights.
The ruling was made in conjunction with a formal notice that the preliminary hearing into Khodorkovskii's case is set for 28 May.
Khodorkovskii, Russia's richest man, has been in jail since 25 October on fraud and tax-evasion charges.
The trial of Platon Lebedev, the former chairman of Yukos holding company Group Menatep, began on 20 May. Lebedev has been jailed since his arrest on 2 July, which started the legal probe by prosecutors into Yukos and its major shareholders, including Khodorkovskii.
