U.S., Russia Sign Nuclear Agreement

27 May 2004 -- U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham and Russian nuclear chief Aleksandr Rumyantsev today signed a deal on the removal of uranium fuel from Soviet-built nuclear reactors.
The deal provides for bringing uranium fuel from more than 20 research nuclear reactors in 17 European, Southeast Asian, and Central Asian states back to Russia.

The agreement is part of the U.S. Global Threat Reduction Initiative, which is aimed at securing radioactive materials that could possibly fall into the hands of terrorists.
