7 June 2004 -- Iraq's new interim government says it has agreed on a plan to disband the country's many factional militias.
Iraq's new interim prime minister, Iyad Allawi, said the deal seeks to have most members of Iraq's factional militias join Iraqi security forces or reenter civilian life by the beginning of next year.
Allawi said the deal was reached between nine political parties that maintain separate militias. Most of those parties are participating in the new Iraqi government. Allawi estimated that are around 100,000 armed militiamen in Iraq.
