10 June 2004 -- Iraq's newly designated interim prime minister, Iyad Allawi, said today that a dispute over Kurdish autonomy has been resolved, though he gave no details about how.
"They were no demands from anyone. All Kurdish ministers who are currently in Baghdad attended yesterday's cabinet meeting, there were some misunderstandings, but this issue has been resolved," Allawi said.
Some Kurdish leaders this week threatened to withdraw from the Iraqi state unless they receive guarantees against limitations on Kurdish self-rule sought by Shi'a leaders. In particular, Kurdish leaders are upset the new UN Security Council resolution on Iraq does not mention the provisional constitution that provided for Kurdish self-rule.
The U.S. government yesterday urged Iraq's Kurdish leaders to fully participate in the Iraqi political process.
