20 June 2004 -- Romanians are voting in the second round of municipal elections today.
Candidates are vying for a total of 1,842 mayoral seats, with 1,294 others already settled during the first round on 6 June.
Romania's ruling Social Democrats are trying to win control of major cities now in the hands of the opposition.
Attention is focused on the central western city of Cluj, where former Interior Minister Ioan Rus is running against the opposition Democrat Party candidate Emil Boc. Rus won 41 percent of the vote during the first round, well ahead of Boc with 34 percent.
Also heavily contested in the second round are mayoral seats in the northeastern city of Iasi, Bacau in the east, and Arad in the west. Elections are also being held in six districts of the capital
Bucharest.
