23 June 2004 -- A Moldovan journalist responsible for exposing an automobile-purchasing ring allegedly run by corrupt government officials was attacked and beaten today.
Alina Anghel, a reporter for the mass-circulation Chisinau broadsheet "Timpul," was assaulted as she left her home by at least two unidentified assailants using metal bars.
Anghel was hospitalized with a concussion and broken left arm. The attackers stole Anghel's purse before escaping.
Constantin Tanase, editor in chief of "Timpul," said the assault comes after two weeks of telephone threats against the reporter by people warning her against further investigative reporting.
Last month, Anghel authored a "Timpul" report identifying a ring of corrupt officials in Moldova's communist government using tax money to purchase Skoda automobiles at inflated prices.
