U.S. Says It Captured Two Taliban Leaders

28 June 2004 -- U.S. forces in Afghanistan said today they have captured two Taliban leaders and killed five Taliban fighters in operations since 26 June.
U.S. military spokeswoman Cindy Beam said the captured Taliban leaders were Hafiz Majid and Mohammad Daud. Beam said there is evidence that both helped supply arms to insurgents and participated in rocket attacks on the military and attacks on aid agency workers.

Beam said they were caught in a southern Afghan province but did not give the name.

Meanwhile, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Lutfullah Mashal said today that most of the 16 people killed in an attack by suspected Taliban in the southcentral Uruzgan Province were from the Hazara minority and were returning refugees.

Mashal said the group recently returned from Iran and was trying to register to vote in upcoming elections when they were attacked.
