Afghan Voter-Registration Site Attacked

6 July 2004-- Afghan officials say suspected Taliban rebels have attacked a school used to register voters for the fall elections, and one registration worker was shot in the leg.
The attack occurred last night about 30 kilometers outside Kandahar.

A deputy chief of police in that southern city said about 30 gunmen exchanged fire with some 15 militia soldiers guarding the school.

Taliban supporters have denounced the elections, and in recent weeks numerous election officials in southern and southeastern Afghanistan have been killed in attacks meant to disrupt the process.

The attackers escaped in a truck, and the wounded worker is being treated in Kandahar hospital.

The registration site was closed today, but local officials plan to reopen tomorrow.
