Bomb Attack Targets Chechnya's Acting President

13 July 2004 -- Chechen officials say an explosion hit the motorcade of Chechnya's acting president in the capital Grozny today, killing one person and wounding three others.
Acting President Sergei Abramov was not injured in the explosion, according to the press secretary of Chechnya's Interior Ministry, Ruslan Atsayev.

Abramov took over in Chechnya after its president, Akhmed-hadji Kadyrov, was killed in a bomb attack in May.

Today's blast came after 18 members of Chechnya's presidential-security service and 24 insurgents were killed in overnight fighting.

The security force's head, Ramzan Kadyrov, told the Interfax news agency the fighting started late yesterday and ended early today around the village of Avtury, about 30 kilometers southeast of Grozny.
