15 July 2004 -- A suspected car bomb northwest of Baghdad killed three Iraqi police officers today, while an oil-pipeline fire has resulted in a halt in oil exports from the line near Kirkuk, in the north of the country.
An Iraqi police spokesman says today's explosion occurred near the main police building in Haditha, 200 kilometers northwest of Baghdad. He said nine other people -- mostly police officers -- were injured in the blast.
Further north of Baghdad, Iraqi firefighters are trying to extinguish a fire near Al-Fathah, between Kirkuk and the Beiji refinery. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear, but insurgents have frequently attacked the country's oil and gas pipelines.
The incidents come one day after roughly 20 people were killed in violence in Iraq. In the biggest single incident, at least 10 people were killed in a suicide car bombing outside the fortified Green Zone enclave housing the interim Iraqi government.
