28 July 2004 -- International aid organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) says it is leaving Afghanistan after 24 years, blaming the government for an increasingly fragile security situation.
The medical charity also accused the U.S.-led coalition forces in Afghanistan of using humanitarian aid for political purposes.
The charity delivers aid in some of the world's most troubled areas. It said today in a statement that poor security made its aid work in Afghanistan impossible.
Five MSF aid workers were killed in a targeted attack in the northwest Afghan province of Badghis on 2 June, an area previously considered safe. The charity blamed the Afghan government for failure to conduct what it called a "credible investigation" into the killings.
