40-50 Insurgents Reported Killed In Afghan Border Clash

3 August 2004 -- U.S. military officials in Afghanistan said today they believe between 40 and 50 suspected Taliban militants have been killed in heavy fighting in the southeastern Khost Province.
The military said in a statement that the casualty figure is based on estimates by U.S. pilots flying in support of Afghan government troops in the fighting yesterday.

The clashes erupted after guerrillas coming from neighboring Pakistan attacked a military post.

U.S. bombers and attack helicopters were sent to support the Afghan soldiers.

The suspected Taliban fighters have reportedly retreated over the border.
