UN Security Council
4 August 2004 -- Russia's ambassador to the United Nations says the situation in Kosovo will be of primary importance while Russia holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month.
Andrey Denisov made the statement late on 3 August as he outlined his goals.
"The importance of this period as far as Kosovo issue is concerned is very high because we still remember the outbreak of violence in this province in March, which is very disappointing, and also we envisage very active discussions within the Security Council this month," Denisov said.
Ethnic Albanian mobs have been blamed for the wave of attacks in March on minority Serbs, that resulted in the destruction of numerous Serbian houses and Orthodox churches. Nineteen people were killed and more than 900 others were injured.
The UN Security Council is due on 5 August to discuss a report by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on the situation in Kosovo, which has been a virtual UN protectorate for five years. On 3 August, Annan expressed strong concern about a lack of progress on reforms in Kosovo.
