23 August 2004 -- President Pervez Musharraf promised visiting Afghan leader Hamid Karzai today that Pakistan will not allow Islamic militants to use Pakistani soil to disrupt Afghanistan's presidential elections this fall.
Musharraf made his remarks to reporters after meeting with Karzai in Islamabad, the Pakistani capital, and after Pakistan's military said it had killed four foreign militants in an area bordering Afghanistan. Reuters quoted an unnamed provincial official as saying the fighters were Uzbeks.
Both Musharraf and Karzai vowed to enhance their cooperation in the fight against terrorism as well as to increase bilateral trade.
Musharraf said the Pakistani Army is operating strongly against Al-Qaeda and the militants were on the run. He said some militants may manage to cross into Afghanistan, but no one should doubt Pakistan's intention to prevent such infiltration, particularly ahead of Afghan presidential elections set for October.
