24 August 2004 -- The U.S. government has voiced concern over the environmental consequences to the Danube Delta of a planned canal in Ukraine.
The State Department said Washington is urging Ukraine's government to conduct an impact assessment and select a route that would minimize what the U.S. State Department called the destructive impact on the environment.
The State Department said Romania, Germany, the European Union, and environmental groups have also voiced concern.
The Danube Delta, divided by the border between Romania and Ukraine, is home to 300 species of bird and 90 species of fish, many of which are rare or endangered.
Romania's Foreign Ministry has asked the United Nations to name an international commission to investigate the environmental impact of the construction of the Ukrainian canal.
