Sept 2 (NCA) -- Iran said today it shares the international community's fears over the potential military uses of nuclear technology but reiterated it has the right to pursue a nuclear program for energy purposes.
Manuchehr Mottaqi, head of Iran's Foreign Affairs and National Security Committee, told state television that Iran will continue what he called a "trust-building policy" with the UN's International Atomic Energy Agency. But Mottaqi said Iran insists on the "right to obtain peaceful nuclear technology."
His comments came one day after the UN nuclear watchdog said in a report that it had no confirmation that Iran was building a nuclear bomb but that Tehran does have plans to enrich uranium, a step in the development of nuclear weapons.
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said the United States wants the UN agency to refer Iran to the UN Security Council for possible sanctions because U.S. officials are conviced Iran is developing nuclear weapons.
