Powell Acknowledges U.S. Miscalculated Iraqi Insurgency

2 September 2004 -- U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has acknowledged that the United States miscalculated the strength of the Iraqi insurgents.
Powell made the assessment in an interview with a Panamanian television station. The text of his comments was released in Washington today.

Powell said the United States and his allies must do all they can to defeat the militants.

The Pentagon says the death toll for U.S. military personnel in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in March 2003 is now 975 and the number of wounded was approaching 7,000.
