14 September 2004 -- Security checks have delayed the reopening of schools in Beslan, the Russian town where over 320 hostages were killed when rebels seized a school earlier this month.
Vladimir Khodov, head of Beslan's administration, said the schools will not reopen today, as scheduled, because the Interior Ministry has not yet formally said all of the schools in the region meet new security requirements. Khodov did not say when the schools will reopen.
Officials have tightened security across Russia following the siege that began in the North Ossetian town on 1 September, the first day of school in Russia.
Half of those killed in the three-day siege were children, and the school they attended was heavily damaged will not reopen.
