18 September 2004 -- An Iraqi ambassador has taken up his post in the Iranian capital for the first time since the two countries went to war in 1980.
Iran's state news agency IRNA reports that Mohammad Majid al-Sheikh presented his credentials to Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharazi today. His presentation came as the two countries raised their diplomatic ties to the ambassadorial level.
Al-Sheikh is a member of the Supreme Assembly for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq. The Shi'a group was based in Tehran during the rule of President Saddam Hussein, whose country waged a 1980-1988 war against Iran.
