5 October 2004 -- Top U.S. and Uzbek officials met today in Uzbekistan to discuss bilateral relations.
A U.S. delegation headed by Lincoln Bloomfield, Assistant Secretary of State for Political and Military Affairs, met with Uzbek President Islam Karimov and Uzbek Foreign Minister Sodiq Safayev in the Uzbek capital Tashkent.
The U.S. Embassy released a statement saying the two sides discussed issues connected to Washington's announcement earlier this year of possible U.S. troop redeployments abroad.
Afterward, the Uzbek Foreign Ministry released a statement saying that security in Central Asia depends directly on peace and stability in Afghanistan.
Uzbekistan allows U.S. forces to use military bases on its territory to support ongoing security and humanitarian aid operations in Afghanistan.
