6 October 2004 -- Election officials in Georgia's separatist Abkhazia region have scrapped poll results for the 3 October presidential elections in one disputed region, ordering a revote there.
The Central Election Committee validated the results for all other districts in Abkhazia. The decision to hold a revote in the Gali district comes even though Abkhaz law says the whole republic must hold new elections if the vote is declared invalid in one region.
Uncertainty has surrounded the vote since 4 October, when preliminary results were announced, and then rejected by election officials.
Opposition candidate Sergei Bagapsh, a former prime minister, had declared victory, while candidate and Prime Minister Raul Khadjimba said the vote was flawed and called for new elections.
