7 October 2004 -- A commission in Ukraine investigating the illness of opposition leader and presidential candidate Viktor Yushchenko said today it found no evidence supporting allegations that he was poisoned.
Some members of the parliamentary commission, however, denounced the findings as biased and based on false evidence.
Yushchenko, head of the opposition Our Ukraine bloc, fell ill last month and entered Austria's Rudolfinerhaus hospital on 10 September. Yushchenko and Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych have been leading the polls before the 31 October ballot.
Yushchenko's allies claimed he had been poisoned, which doctors in Vienna said was possible but could not confirm. Yushchenko resumed campaigning in mid-September, but returned to the Vienna hospital late last month for more treatment. He is expected back in Ukraine by 10 October.
