7 November 2004 -- In the Iraqi city of Samarra 37 people, many of them policemen, have been killed in four car bombings by insurgents. Among those killed was a local police chief.
Medics say about 50 other people were injured, including the mayor of Samarra. The city, north of Baghdad, was seized from rebels by U.S. and Iraqi forces only last month.
The rebel stronghold of Al-Fallujah has been pounded again by U.S. warplanes and artillery. Sources said Al-Fallujah's hospital took in two dead and seven wounded.
On 5 November, Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi warned insurgents inside Al-Fallujah to accept a negotiated deal or face an all-out assault. Some 10,000 U.S. and Iraqi troops are massed around the city. U.S. planes have dropped leaflets telling remaining Al-Fallujah residents to leave.
In Ramadi, an attack on a convoy has left 20 U.S. soldiers wounded.
