Yushchenko told the crowd that they were "a few steps before the final victory."
Yushchenko is set to face Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovich in the election's second round on November 21. According to vote results from the Central Election Commission, Yushchenko trails Yanukovich but final results have yet to be released and Yushchenko's supporters are demanding a recount.
Yushchenko today secured the support of Oleksandr Moroz, leader of the Socialist Party, who came in third in the first round with nearly 6 percent of the vote.
Organizers claimed more than 100,000 people had gathered in Kyiv, but police put the number at 10,000. More than 4,000 people rallied in support of Yushchenko in the western city of Lviv. (ap/itar-tass)
