Kyiv, 10 November 2004 (RFE/RL) -- Ukraine's election commission today announced the long-delayed final results of the 31 October presidential election.
According to the results, opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko was ahead, with 39.87 percent of the vote, followed by Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych with 39.32 percent.
Socialist candidate Oleksandr Moroz came third with 5.83 percent of the vote, while communist Petro Simonenko obtained 5.03 percent.
Yanukovych and Yushchenko will face each other in a 21 November runoff.
Supporters of both candidates have complained about the delay in announcing the first round results.
The first round was marred by complaints of intimidation and interference by authorities against Yushchenko supporters, and European observers said the vote marked a backward step for Ukrainian democracy.
