23 November 2004 -- Uzbek prosecutors say that suicide bombers who struck the U.S. and Israeli embassies earlier this year in Uzbekistan's capital Tashkent were Kazakh citizens.
The near-simultaneous suicide attacks by three bombers also targeted the chief prosecutor's office in Tashkent on 30 July. Four Uzbek security guards were killed in the strikes.
Svetlana Artikova, a spokeswoman for the Uzbek Prosecutor-General's Office, said today that a DNA examination of the bombers' remains identified them as Avaskhan Shayusupov and Mavlon Valiev -- residents of the southern Kazakh city of Taraz, near the Uzbek border -- and Dulat Iskakov of the Caspian Sea port of Atyrau.
Artikova said that Uzbek authorities are also asking Kazakhstan to extradite another citizen, Abbos Usmanov, for alleged complicity in earlier terrorist attacks in the spring, which killed at least 47 people in Tashkent and the central Bukhara Province.
