26 November 2004 -- Thousands of supporters of Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko are gathering today near parliament and government buildings in Kyiv following a call yesterday by Yushchenko aides to blockade the buildings.
The fifth consecutive day of large protests in Ukraine's capital comes one day after the Supreme Court temporarily blocked the inauguration of Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych as president.
The court said it will consider an appeal on 29 November from Yushchenko, who says the presidential election on 21 November was rigged in favor of Yanukovych.
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana, Polish President Aleksandr Kwasniewski, and Jan Kubis, secretary-general of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), are all expected in Kyiv today to help mediate a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
A spokesman for Lithuanian President Valdas Adamkus has said the Baltic country's leader will also travel to Kyiv today to help.
