1 December 2004 -- Final results released today show Romania's ruling ex-communists won 36.6 percent in the 28 November parliamentary elections.
The results, which still need to be certified, show the opposition alliance of Liberals and Democrats won 31.3 percent of the vote.
No party won enough votes to gain a majority in parliament.
In the presidential election held the same day, Prime Minister Adrian Nastase won a plurality with 40.9 percent. He will face a 12 December runoff against alliance leader Traian Basescu, who won 33.9 percent.
Basescu yesterday asked the electoral bureau to cancel both elections, citing alleged voting fraud, but the electoral authority rejected that demand.
