Romania Wraps Up Membership Talks With EU

8 December 2004 -- Romania has completed its membership talks with the European Union.
Foreign Minister Mircea Geoana said today that the government is "extremely confident" Romania will join the EU on 1 January 2007.

The EU says membership could be pushed back if Romania backtracks on democratic reforms, but Geoana said the process of joining the EU has passed the point of no return, saying, "It is over."

EU leaders are set to officially seal the end of negotiations at a summit in Brussels next week.
