13 December 2004 -- A car bomb explosion killed at least seven Iraqis today at an entrance to the Green Zone in Baghdad that houses Iraq's interim government and foreign embassies.
The blast occurred when a vehicle that had been waiting in line to enter the zone exploded as it drove up to the checkpoint. Several cars were destroyed.
Earlier, the U.S. military said seven U.S. Marines were killed in two separate incidents in the Iraqi province of Anbar, which contains the battleground cities of Al-Fallujah and Al-Ramadi.
The military statement did not say whether the deaths were connected to the latest fighting in Al-Fallujah between insurgents and U.S. and allied Iraqi forces. U.S. forces called in missile strikes on targets in Al-Fallujah yesterday.
Today marks one year since U.S. troops captured former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein in a hole in the ground near his hometown of Tikrit.
