Saakashvili Arrives In Ukraine

31 December 2004 -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has arrived in Kyiv to meet with Ukraine's President-elect Viktor Yushchenko.
Separately, outgoing President Leonid Kuchma also plans to meet with the Georgian leader, who came to power in the so-called Rose Revolution in November 2003.

Saakashvili's first stop in the Ukrainian capital was at a tent camp on Kyiv's main street. He told Yushchenko supporters "I was with you" during their campaign against rival Viktor Yanukovych.

Yushchenko, Saakashvili, and Kyiv Mayor Oleksandr Omelchenko are scheduled to appear together shortly before midnight on Kyiv's main Independence Square.

Yanukovych, alleging irregularities in an election rerun on 26 December, so far has not conceded defeat.

Both the Central Election Commission and the courts have dismissed Yanukovych's appeals, but he has vowed to press his case to the Supreme Court.
