3 January 2005 -- A series of insurgent attacks in Iraq today killed at least 22 people, including 19 police and National Guardsmen.
In Baghdad, a suicide bomber posing as a taxi driver killed two policemen and a civilian near the headquarters of interim Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi's party.
The militant group Army of Ansar Al-Sunnah later claimed responsibility for that bombing.
Another car-bomb attack occurred in Balad, about 80 kilometers north of Baghdad, killing four National Guard soldiers and wounding 14 others.
In former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, a roadside bomb killed at least six National Guardsmen.
Five National Guardsmen and two other Iraqis were killed by another roadside bomb between Samarra and Al-Duluiyah.
Also today, two policemen were killed in a drive-by shooting at a checkpoint in the town of Baiji, northwest of Baghdad.
