Major Security Operation Under Way In Ingushetia

11 January 2005 -- A large-scale security operation is under way in several districts of the Russian republic of Ingushetia today after an attack on a military barracks wounded four Russian troops.
Border guards say that unknown assailants yesterday opened fire on the barracks with a hand-held antitank grenade launcher near Nazran in southern Ingushetia, wounding the four sleeping troops.

Federal Security Service (FSB) officers, Interior Ministry special troops, police, and border guards launched a joint operation following the attack. But border-guard spokesman Sergei Livantsov said the massive sweep is not in connection with the attack.

Reports say the security operation is being conducted in several areas of the republic, with troops conducting house-to-house searches and identification checks.
