3 February 2005 -- The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) says it has deployed 28 observers to Moldova to monitor the runup to 6 March general elections.
The OSCE, Europe's top security organization, said today in a statement that it has sent 12 staff members to the capital Chisinau and 16 long-term observers to the provinces. The organization has also asked for 150 short-term observers to be deployed to Moldova, a county of 4.3 million, a few days ahead of the elections.
Yesterday, the Council of Europe, which monitors human rights in Europe, said it will send 40 observers to monitor the elections.
The Communists, who currently hold 71 of 100 seats, are the favorites in the elections although their support has eroded since they came to power in 2000.
