Kyrgyz President Urges People To Vote

Bishkek, 10 March 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyz President Askar Akaev appealed to the nation in a television address today, urging citizens to vote in parliamentary run-off elections on 13 March.
He also appealed to opposition forces to restrain from unlawful activities.

Akaev said some political groups are trying to create obstacles for the runoff, and they are trying to destabilize the country. "I urge all the voters [in the most constituencies where there will be runoffs] to participate with deep responsibility in the Sunday runoff, as they did during the first round of [parliamentary] elections [on 27 February], and to vote for well-deserved candidates," he said. "Vote for your future, for stability in our country, for your own rights!"

He urged authorities to use all means to make sure the run-off is fair. He said all the issues have to be settled by legal means and by the judiciary.
