U.S. Forces Kill Five Militants In Afghanistan

23 March 2005 -- The U.S. military today says U.S. warplanes in Afghanistan have killed five suspected militants near the Pakistani border.
A U.S. military statement says the planes started the operation after insurgents fired a total of 13 rockets at two U.S. bases in the southeastern province of Khost late yesterday.

The statement said U.S. troops also responded with artillery fire from their bases near Khost city. No U.S. or allied forces were hurt.

The U.S. military has more than 17,000 soldiers in Afghanistan. Most of them are battling militants in the country's south and southeast regions where remnants of the ousted Taliban regime have been waging an insurgency.
