28 March 2005 -- A U.S. soldier pleaded not guilty today as he went on trial on charges related to the killing last year of a critically wounded Iraqi.
Captain Rogelio Maynulet could face a maximum sentence of 20 years if convicted of assault with intent to commit murder. His trial is taking place in Wiesbaden, Germany, at the American military base.
The charges stemmed from a 2004 incident when Maynulet was on a patrol near the city of Kufa, south of Baghdad. Two Iraqis were wounded when U.S. soldiers opened fire on their car believing the men to be militants.
Maynulet shot the driver who had suffered critical injuries. His fellow officers told the court he shot the Iraqi to end his suffering.
