30 March 2005 -- Armed assailants today opened fire on a checkpoint in Iraq's northern city of Mosul.
Police said six people were killed in the exchange of fire that followed. It was not immediately clear how many of those killed were attackers and how many were civilians.
U.S. forces had no immediate information on the incident.
Also today, armed men opened fire on Shi'ite pilgrims south of Baghdad, killing one and injuring two.
The pilgrims were among the thousands of Shi'a headed towards Karbala to celebrate a major Shi'ite religious festival.
